SUMMARY:George Gershwin's World
DESCRIPTION:The end of the First World War in 1918 signaled the beginning of a new era of economic prosperity\, the relaxation of Victorian mores\, and a national fascination in entertainment.  Heroes were quickly identified: John Barrymore\, Fanny Brice\, Babe Ruth\, Mary Pickford\, and\, in 1924\, a young Jewish man born in Brooklyn\, George Gershwin.  During the next 17 years his fame would grow meteorically\, catapulting him to international fame before his tragic death in 1937.  Gershwin is one of the giants of American music\, unique in that he was both a brilliant writer of popular songs (“Swanee\,” “I Got Rhythm\,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”) and of more serious music\, including Rhapsody in Blue\, An American in Paris\, and Porgy and Bess.

SUMMARY:The Enigmatic Life of Frank Sinatra
DESCRIPTION:Sinatra’s career took flight from the Rustic Cabin in Englewood Cliff\, NJ\, when trumpeter Harry James rescued him from the ranks of singing waiters in 1939. Yet not until Tommy Dorsey coaxed him into his band later that year did Sinatra begin to soar as the idol of the bobby-soxers. Within three years\, he led the male singer polls in both Billboard and Downbeat magazine and by 1946 his discs for Columbia Records were selling 10 million copies a year. \nThe evening’s fare will also sample Sinatra’s forty-year movie career. Teaming with Gene Kelly in two early films\, Anchors Away and On the Town\, Sinatra appeared in fifty-six films including From Here to Eternity\, in which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Enjoy clips from those films and others including Guys and Dolls with Marlon Brando\, Pal Joey co-starring Rita Heyworth and Kim Novak\, The Manchurian Candidate and two of Cole Porter’s movie scores\, Can-Can and High Society\, which paired Sinatra with his childhood idol\, Bing Crosby.

SUMMARY:Judy Garland: Climbing Over the Rainbow
DESCRIPTION:Spanning forty-five years of achievement with vaudeville\, films\, TV specials and voluminous concert extravaganzas\, Judy Garland thrilled audiences who adored her stunning intellect. Whiz kid Frances Ethel Gump was twelve years old when she changed her name to Judy Garland in 1934. Louis Mayer began her enchantment the next year by signing her at MGM\, and enrolling his “little hunchback” in the Metro school with starlets Elizabeth Taylor\, Lana Turner and Ava Gardner. After nine Andy Hardy films with Mickey Rooney\, she expanded her gleam in 1939 when both “The Wizard of Oz” and “Babes in Arms” were released\, as only three decades of stardom and struggle awaited “America’s Sweetheart.” \nEnjoy your fantasies and remembrances as American music specialist Robert Wyatt takes you through Garland’s extraordinary life. Film clips will be abundant\, starting with The Broadway Melody of 1938 and moving through 1944 blockbuster Meet Me in St. Louis\, The Harvey Girls\, Cole Porter’s gem-ridden The Pirate of 1948 and the sizzling A Star is Born\, the 1954 masterwork which became her last bravura film. TV specials like the 1962 The Judy Garland Show with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra\, the specials that featured Robert Goulet still basking from Camelot\, and of course\, the prized duos with daughter Liza Minnelli\, will stimulate your evening.

SUMMARY:Irving Berlin: The Last Troubadour
DESCRIPTION:It was truly a “ragtime to riches” path chosen by the immigrant Russian Jew Israel Baline. A teen aged waif slumming an existence in the Bowery during the earliest years of the twentieth-century\, Irving Berlin\, as he was later known\, began writing songs before he knew how to read music. A self-taught and rather pathetic pianist\, he morphed into a genuine musical icon by the age of 23 and remained the standard bearer for all songwriters until his death at the age of 101. Perhaps Jerome Kern describes it most succinctly: “Irving Berlin has no ‘place’ in American music—Irving Berlin IS American music.”

SUMMARY:Sweet and Low-Down at the Cotton Club
DESCRIPTION:The Great War was over\, times were upbeat and a sense of prosperity\, freedom and excitement was evident across the country. In New York City\, the Harlem nightclubs were the happening places. From dusk to dawn their rooms were filled with boisterous patrons\, the aroma of cigarette smoke and alcohol\, and the sounds of a new music that tied it all together: jazz. One ballroom\, the Cotton Club\, on the second story of a building at 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue\, was the crème de la crème of Manhattan’s nightspots. It was the favorite of the elite\, the “Aristocrat of Harlem\,” and its patrons included celebrities like George Gershwin\, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor\, Paul Whiteman and Marlene Dietrich. Harold Arlen and Dorothy Fields wrote and produced the stage shows\, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway conducted their snappy jazz bands\, and the great black entertainers like Ethel Waters\, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson\, Lena Horne and Josephine Baker played the room to the delight of the all-white audience. Live piano music from the era will be performed coupled with archival music and newsreel footage of Harlem during its glory days.
