SUMMARY:Irving Berlin: The Last Troubadour
DESCRIPTION:It was truly a “ragtime to riches” path chosen by the immigrant Russian Jew Israel Baline. A teen aged waif slumming an existence in the Bowery during the earliest years of the twentieth-century\, Irving Berlin\, as he was later known\, began writing songs before he knew how to read music. A self-taught and rather pathetic pianist\, he morphed into a genuine musical icon by the age of 23 and remained the standard bearer for all songwriters until his death at the age of 101. Perhaps Jerome Kern describes it most succinctly: “Irving Berlin has no ‘place’ in American music—Irving Berlin IS American music.”

One ballroom\, the Cotton Club\, on the second story of a building at 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue\, was the crème de la crème of Manhattan’s nightspots. It was the favorite of the elite\, the “Aristocrat of Harlem\,” and its patrons included celebrities like George Gershwin\, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor\, Paul Whiteman and Marlene Dietrich. Harold Arlen and Dorothy Fields wrote and produced the stage shows\, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway conducted their snappy jazz bands\, and the great black entertainers like Ethel Waters\, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson\, Lena Horne and Josephine Baker played the room to the delight of the all-white audience. Live piano music from the era will be performed coupled with archival music and newsreel footage of Harlem during its glory days.

DESCRIPTION:Although ragtime music was first heard at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893\, it took another seven years for the syncopated music to become the rage of the new century. Scott Joplin wrote the bulk of the most-remembered classical piano rags\, but dozens of other composers vied for his recognition. From Kansas City came James Scott and Joseph Lamb who arrived in New York City from across the river in New Jersey. But then the barons of the music publishing industry on Tin Pan Alley flooded the market with cheap imitations which soured the buyers of sheet music. Ragtime music was finished by 1917\, the year that Joplin died. This program includes scores of archival recordings and clips\, as well as live performance by Robert Wyatt.

Teaming with Gene Kelly in two early films\, Anchors Away and On the Town\, Sinatra appeared in fifty-six films including From Here to Eternity\, in which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Enjoy clips from those films and others including Guys and Dolls with Marlon Brando\, Pal Joey co-starring Rita Heyworth and Kim Novak\, The Manchurian Candidate and two of Cole Porter’s movie scores\, Can-Can and High Society\, which paired Sinatra with his childhood idol\, Bing Crosby.

DESCRIPTION:The musical theatre of the Victorian era radiated the brilliance of librettist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan and to the works they jointly created. Between 1871 and 1896 they collaborated on fourteen comic operas of which H.M.S. Pinafore\, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known. Along with Gilbert’s clever and fanciful words\, Sullivan added melodies which could convey both humor and pathos. Together\, their brilliance of form and composition opened the doors for the pioneers of the American musical theater who emerged early in the twentieth century.

DESCRIPTION:Baritone Frank Sinatra was indisputably the 20th century’s greatest singer of popular song. Though influenced by Bing Crosby’s crooning\, and by learning from trombonist Tommy Dorsey’s breath control and blues singer Billie Holiday’s rhythmic swing\, Frank Sinatra mainstreamed the concept of singing colloquially\, treating lyrics as personal statements and handling melodies with the ease of a jazz improviser. His best work is standards —Cole Porter\, Irving Berlin\, Jerome Kern\, and the Gershwins —but Sinatra\, despite his 1957 denunciation of rock & roll as degenerate\, has recorded songs by the likes of Stevie Wonder\, George Harrison\, Jimmy Webb\, and Billy Joel. Not only did his freely interpretive approach pave the way for the idiosyncrasies of rock singing\, but with his character a mix of tough-guy cool and romantic vulnerability\, he became the first true pop idol\, a superstar who through his music established a persona audiences found compelling and true.

Between 1871 and 1896 they collaborated on fourteen comic operas of which H.M.S. Pinafore\, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known. Along with Gilbert’s clever and fanciful words\, Sullivan added melodies which could convey both humor and pathos. Together\, their brilliance of form and composition opened the doors for the pioneers of the American musical theater who emerged early in the twentieth century.

SUMMARY:The Ragtime Craze!
DESCRIPTION:Although ragtime music was first heard at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893\, it took another seven years for the syncopated music to become the rage of the new century. Scott Joplin wrote the bulk of the most-remembered classical piano rags\, but dozens of other composers vied for his recognition. From Kansas City came James Scott and Joseph Lamb who arrived in New York City from across the river in New Jersey. But then the barons of the music publishing industry on Tin Pan Alley flooded the market with cheap imitations which soured the buyers of sheet music. Ragtime music was finished by 1917\, the year that Joplin died. This program includes scores of archival recordings and clips\, as well as live performance by Dr. Wyatt.

SUMMARY:Irving Berlin: the Last Troubadour
DESCRIPTION:It was truly a “ragtime to riches” path chosen by the immigrant Russian Jew Israel Baline. A teenaged waif slumming an existence in the Bowery during the earliest years of the twentieth-century\, Irving Berlin\, as he was later known\, began writing songs before he knew how to read music. A self-taught and rather pathetic pianist\, he morphed into a genuine musical icon by the age of 23 and remained the standard bearer for all songwriters until his death at the age of 101. Perhaps Jerome Kern describes it most succinctly: “Irving Berlin has no ‘place’ in American music—Irving Berlin IS American music.”

DESCRIPTION:British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has created a global empire unrivaled in the history of musical theatre. In 1983\, he was the first composer to have three musicals simultaneously on Broadway and in London’s West End\, a feat he duplicated five years later. The New York production of The Phantom of the Opera\, which opened in 1988\, is now nearing 12\,000 performances and was joined this season by a Broadway revival of another of the composer’s megahits\, Cats. \nLloyd Webber’s phenomenal successes can be attributed to a particular blend of showmanship and superb craft—the genesis of which began in childhood. The son of professional musicians\, he also possessed passions for architecture\, history\, mechanics\, and staging\, which fostered in him an ability to envision productions of astonishing complexity and grandeur. \nHis early collaborations with lyricist Tim Rice—Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, and Evita—launched his career as an innovative musical force\, and long-running shows like Cats and Phantom turned him into an international phenomenon. Glenn Close stars in a revival of another of his biggest hits\, Sunset Boulevard\, on Broadway next season. \nThere have also been some disappointments and failures along the way—among them Starlight Express\, By Jeeves\, and the recent Stephen Ward—and the long-awaited sequel to Phantom\, Love Never Dies received mixed reviews and a West End run of just a year and a half.
